Legal Research Case Evaluations Can Help Your Lawyer Build You a Good Appeal

nlpa blog 12 2-05-15Once you are convicted of a crime, you have a last line of defense to try to protect you from wrongful conviction. This is the criminal appeal which allows your lawyer to present new evidence, point out problems not brought out in the last time the case was in court, and attempt to have old evidence removed. This appeal can help a person obtain a lesser sentence or have a ruling overturned.

Before the entire appeal process can begin, someone needs to look over the case and see which parts of the case should even be brought up on appeal. Having a legal research case evaluation done on the case, can help your lawyer pinpoint parts of the case that might be highlighted for the appeal. The evaluation should help your lawyer build a better appeal case.

A Written Opening Brief is Very Important for Having Your Appeal Heard

nlpa blog 11 2-05-15When your loved one is in jail, it can be very difficult to be able to get the time to go and see them or to have a relationship with them. A long sentence stretching into the foreseeable future can feel a bit like a sentence for both of you. This can be especially difficult if you feel that the punishment is unfair based on the crime or that the person was wrongly convicted.

Luckily, there is an appeals process that ever single convict can go through to try and obtain a lesser sentence or even have a conviction overturned. This process is started by a compelling written opening brief that a lawyer submits to court. This brief should cover the information of the case and why an appeal is necessary by presenting problems of the initial case.

A Prison Transfer Can Give Prisoners Better Opportunities

nlpa blog 10 2-05-15One of the things that is important to know when you or a loved one is serving time in prison is that not all prisons are created equally. Some of these prisons have better programs or services that could be better for certain convicts. Other prisons are closer to home which can make it easier for friends and family to keep in contact over the time that is spent there.

When a prisoner is assigned to a prison, some of these things may be taken into account, but people don’t always end up where they want to be due to overcrowding in some prisons. If you have been serving a sentence in a prison different than one that you wanted to be in, you can request a prison transfer. Being in a different prison can sometimes help prisoners to be rehabilitated.
